That Medium Of Lightweight Propagation: The Luminiferous Ether -- Not
As scientists started to unravel the techniques of light, its properties and its movement, they compared it about what they knew: waves propagating through a medium. Water waves over the ocean; sound waves over the air; Rossby waves with the jet stream. And so the luminiferous ether ended up being postulated. It was an honest mistake, and its modification led Albert Einstein to formulate the idea of special relativity. Albert Michelson Albert Michelson
